For the Love of Metal

The inspiration for my designs comes from the world around my studio in rural Suffolk, although ideas can come from anywhere - Victorian iron work in the floor of a museum - or tidal lines in sand…..but perhaps my greatest influence and inspiration is a love of the metal itself.

I have worked with metal since falling in love with it as a material while studying for a BA (Hon) in Fine Art. It has been the driving force behind my career, first as a sculptor and lecturer and now as a designer and maker.

Initially inspired by the work of Andre Charles Boulle, “furniture jeweller” at the court of Louis XIV, I developed a process of applying my original designs cut in sheet metal onto furniture which are then inlaid with gesso. I am intrigued by taking an existing piece of furniture and transforming it to a new and dynamic life

Since successfully launching my first collection of furniture at The London Design Fair in 2012 I have worked extensively with both interior designers and public and private clients in Europe and America - sourcing the original furniture to suit the client’s criteria and then transforming it into unique statement pieces. I have also worked on bespoke projects including doors and screens and I am now expanding my practice to include wall panels.

The process I have developed is a form of modern marquetry that creates a durable, functional and dynamic veneer that transforms the furniture.I work with. My pieces sit comfortably in both contemporary and traditional interiors
